The Great Highland Bagpipe is probably the most famous Scottish musical instrument. It consists of a blow pipe, a chanter and three drones (two tenors and one bass), as well as a leather bag into which the other parts are integrated.

In the beginning the Highland Pipe was played at social occasions such as weddings. The music was functional and consequently used as part of Highland society. However, due to historical events it became increasingly used for military purposes.

That change of patronage had a immense impact on the repertoire of the instrument, and in some ways uprooted it from its former context.
